Aquascape or Just Filling the Tank? Figure This Out Before You Order Plants

When someone asks us for a plant quote, the real first question isn’t which species or how many — it’s what the tank is actually for. That answer changes everything downstream: which plants make sense, how they should be arranged, and even how much you should expect to spend. It comes down to a choice between two different goals that get lumped together constantly: aquascaping and filling a tank.

Filling a tank

This is the goal for most first-time planted tank owners, and there’s nothing wrong with it. You want green, you want cover for your fish, you want lower nitrates — but you’re not chasing a specific visual composition. Priorities:

If this is you, skip the zone-by-zone planning below and just ask for a mixed bundle sized to your tank — see our guide to how many plants a tank actually needs.

Aquascaping

This is a different goal entirely: you’re composing a scene, not just greening a box of water. That means:

The honest middle ground

Most tanks land somewhere between the two, and that’s fine — a loosely aquascaped tank with a driftwood centerpiece and a casual planting plan around it is a completely legitimate outcome. The point of asking the question isn’t to force a choice, it’s to stop the plant order from being a guess. Knowing which end of the spectrum you’re closer to is what lets us actually recommend species and quantities instead of just listing what’s in stock.

What to tell us when you order

When you reach out for a quote, the fastest path to a good recommendation is answering three things: your tank’s dimensions, whether you’re aiming for a composed aquascape or a simple fill, and whether you’re running CO2 or staying low-tech. With those three answers, a bundle recommendation takes minutes instead of a long back-and-forth.
